Nana's Singers Shout Out

Q&A with Anna Tsuchiya and Olivia

by the Shojo Beat staff

Anna Tsuchiya and Olivia, both glamorous Japanese pop stars, sing in the rock-and-roll anime Nana. Anna belts out vocals for Nana Osaki, lead singer for Black Stones. Olivia does the same for Reira of Trapnest. Both women collaborated on the anime compilation album Nana Best and have also done plenty of solo work. We caught up with each star over email to ask them about manga, anime, and life.

Anna Tsuchiya (left) and Olivia (right) sing for rival bands in the Nana anime,
but they feel no rivalry for each other in real life.

Anna Tsuchiya

Shojo Beat: Describe your new album Nudy Show. Did you try out some new sounds?
Anna Tsuchiya: The songs on Nana Best are mostly the ones I chose as a singer in the Nana anime, so it was created with a different approach than my original album. In Nudy Show!, I took some wonderful elements from music overseas that I listened to when I was small and arranged them in contemporary style. I also produced sound I thought was cool. In other words, my music background and influences are the core of this album. I produced this album hoping to express to people how great rock music is.

SB: Nudy Show! Why did you choose this title for your album?
AT: To begin with, there is something in this title that is linked to my first album, strip me?. In Nudy Show! I'm exposing my music style and creating a show. At the same time, like the image on this album jacket, I tried to express how people can be lying, or holding something back, or dressing himself or herself up. In a way, this could be the real "nakedness of contemporary people," so these are the two opposite meanings of the album title.

SB: What's your favorite manga?
AT: Urayasu Tekkin Kazoku (Super Radical Gag Family), Obocchama-kun, Shamo, Nana.

SB: What's your favorite anime?
AT: All Disney series, SpongeBob, Crayon Shin-chan.

Olivia

Shojo Beat: Describe your new mini-album Trinka Trinka. How is it different from the music you recorded on Nana Best?
Olivia: I started to make Trinka Trinka from the beginning of last year right when I came out of a depression. I was so relieved to find that it's possible to come out of the hole. So I wanted to write about this feeling. The sound naturally came out energetic, cute, and peppy. The Nana music is me acting out as Reira. Trinka Trinka should be more me.

SB: Please list what you do on an average non-work day.
O: Early rise, meditation, water plants, breakfast, check emails, walk in the park, clear my head, lunch, organize my schedule, list things to do, start knockin' things off my "to do" list, song writing, illustrating, computer art, making strange things, read, go to the theatre to watch a movie, dinner alone or with a friend, workout, meditation, smile, sleep.

SB: What is your favorite manga or cartoon?
O: [I like] Hayao Miyazaki's work.

SB: What is your favorite anime?
O: Princess Mononoke, Tekkonkincreet, Mind Game.
