Like New Year's but without the resolutions, back-to-school season is a chance to show off the new you. And there's no better way than by adding J-Style to your wardrobe. (Hint: Wear loose, long socks with everything.) To help you out, SB highlights three popular fashion looks from Japan, how to get them, and most importantly, what NOT to wear.
PUNK
THE LOOK
Japanese punk borrows the basic look from the UK punk movement of the 70s but adds such uber-cuteness that it's hard to get intimidated by the adorable punk kids who hang out around Harajuku's Takeshita Street. Punks in Japan wear high-fashion labels such as Vivienne Westwood and local Japanese brands such as Hellcatpunks (hellcatpunks.com) and 666 (666jp.com). Even at the grungiest gigs, kids show up in designer ripped jeans, mohawks gelled to perfection, and pastel-colored hair. Studs and safety pins, Doc Martins or Converse Chucks, studded leather jackets, ripped and colored fishnets, leopard skin pants, band T-shirts, kilts with patches, and knitted sweaters with the British flag are all de rigueur.
