"Harvest Moon" refers to a full moon in September that marks the autumn equinox (when day and night are of equal time in every location on earth). Most cultures celebrate this astrological event in one way or another, and in Japan it's marked by a fall festivity called Tsukimi (moon viewing). Along with, well, viewing the moon, the event includes making a variety of offerings to it. The traditional (and not so traditional) foodstuffs of Tsukimi not only honor the moon, they also mimic it, whether with spherical white sweets or the shiny round yoke of an egg.
