Inside The Traditional Japanese Home |

It's a mistake that many foreigners make when they
first come to Japan. You walk into someone's home and stomp straight through to the living room, shoes and all,
only to turn and discover that your host has quietly removed his or her own footwear and donned a pair of slippers instead.
No Japanese person would dream of entering a house or
apartment without taking off his or her shoes first. It's as basic as washing your hands before a meal. Put simply, it keeps
the place cleanerand when you're conducting much of your daily business at floor level, that makes a lot of sense. |
